Thick Film Planar CO2 Sensors Based on Na β-Alumina Solid Electrolyte

Abstract: Practical small-sized thick film CO 2 sensor with self-heater was fabricated with Na β-Alumina (NBA), Na 2 Ti 6 O 13 -TiO 2 , and Na 2 CO 3 as a solid electrolyte, reference electrode, and a sensing electrode, respectively. The measured EMF from the sensor followed the Nernstian behavior with CO 2 concentration change in the range of 400 to 600 • C (350-580 mW power consumption). However, in the aspect of stability, densification of the NBA thick film and prevention of Na 2 CO 3 evaporation were needed. In thi… Show more

“…Several studies are focused on the potentiometric detection type and conductivity. They depend on the change in the concentration of ions, due to a change in pH [44], modifying the measured potential [44,45] or conductivity [46][47][48]. On the other hand, as specified by Neethirajan et al [49], some potentiometric sensors display poor repeatability and reproducibility of potentiometric responses.…”

“…Electrochemical potentiometric CO 2 sensors using solid electrolytes are one among promising methods because of their compact structure, ability of continuous monitoring, high selectivity, and low cost (Hong, Kim, Jung, & Park, 2005). However, they require power for signal generation, and often require above 400 C operating temperature and, therefore, are not suited for food packaging applications.…”

“…For example, Na 2 CO 3 can be used with Na b alumina [135][136][137], NASICON [138][139][140][141][142][143][144][145][146], or a sodium aluminosilicate glass [147] as the electrolyte for a CO 2 sensor, in which case the Na 2 CO 3 equilibrates with CO 2 in the gas and Na þ in the electrolyte according to the following reaction:…”
