Thin-Film Coated Plastic Wrap for Food Packaging

Abstract: In this study, the antimicrobial property and food package capability of polymethylpentene (PMP) substrate with silicon oxdie (SiOx) and organic silicon (SiCxHy) stacked layers deposited by an inductively coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition system were investigated. The experimental results show that the stacked pair number of SiOx/SiCxHy on PMP is limited to three pairs, beyond which the films will crack and cause package failure. The three-pair SiOx/SiCxHy on PMP shows a low water vapor transmission rat… Show more

“…Overall, the WVTR values measured for the ZnONPs/stearic acid coatings reported herein are comparable to those measured for other coatings commonly used for packaging applications based on biopolymers (i.e., thermoplastic starch) or fossil oil (i.e., ethylene vinyl alcohol) [44]. Worthy of note is also the fact that, whatever the deposition technique, the moisture barrier properties exhibited by the single couple ZnONPs/stearic acid proved to be comparable to a two-pair SiOx/SiCxHy coating [45] and more efficient than some representative hybrid multilayer coatings based on 2-hydroxy-3-trimethylammoniumpropylchloride starch/montmorillonite and chitosan/montmorillonite (20 bilayer each) [46].…”

“…Overall, the results reported herein, obtained with a single deposition of a ZnONPs/stearic acid layer, open the perspectives toward the preparation of low cost and sustainable functional coatings for flexible plastic substrates with good hydrophobic and moisture barrier properties, which can be very attractive for packaging applications [45,47].…”

“…In addition to being versatile, with protective and preservative properties (electrical, acoustic and thermal) (Jamnongkan et al, 2022;Rosenboom et al, 2022). According to Wu et al (2017), some polymers have the ability to form very thin films and films, which are attractive in production and application in food packaging.…”

“…Permeation comprises three processes: adsorption of the permeating species into the polymer, diffusion through the polymer membrane and desorption of the permeating species from the polymer surface. Permeation is important for many design applications, such as packaging, gas separation, analytical chemistry, polymer electrolytes, and biosensors 1 6 . Studying the permeability of gases through materials under different environmental conditions is crucial to understand if the corresponding material is adapted to the chosen gases.…”
