Thin Layer Ionophore-Based Membrane for Multianalyte Ion Activity Detection

Abstract: A concept is introduced that allows one to detect the activity of multiple ions simultaneously and selectively with a single ion-selective membrane. This is demonstrated with ∼300 nm thin plasticized PVC membranes containing up to two ionophores in addition to a lipophilic cation-exchanger, overlaid on an electropolymerized poly-3-octylthiophene (POT) film as the electron to ion transducer. The ion-selective membranes are formulated under ionophore depleted conditions (avoiding excess of ionophore over ion-exc… Show more

“…20,21 By applying an anodic potential, the POT underlayer was partially oxidized to POT + accompanied by p-doping from the lipophilic anion (TFPB − ), which is present in the membrane. Therefore, Na + is exhaustively expelled from the membrane to maintain the electroneutrality of the film (vice versa during the cathodic wave; see Figure S2) resulting in a Gaussian shaped and broad peak (>90 mV).…”

“…9,10,16 Significantly, this work lays the foundation for various applications of voltammetric multiion detection including the detection of millimolar physiological ions in biological and biomedical samples. 9,11 Specifically, the IE and IT mechanisms based on single and multiple ionophores, respectively, were assessed theoretically and demonstrated experimentally.…”

“…Interestingly, this voltammetric IE reaction gives a current response when the net charge transferred by each ionophore molecule is not zero, i.e., zJnnormalJzInnormalI>0 Alternatively, the IT mechanism utilizes the second ionophore, L′, to independently transfer the secondary ion without ion exchange nnormalJnormalL(normalm)+normalJznormalJ(normalw)normalLnnormalJnormalJznormalJ(normalm) thereby eliminating the requirement of eq 3. Advantageously, our approach does not require the addition of an ionic site to a membrane in contrast to the Bakker's approach, 10,11 where an analyte ion must be initially present in the membrane phase.…”

“…In this context, Crespo and coworkers [7] developed a thin film poly(3-octylthiophene) (POT) redox polymer/PVC membrane incorporating lipophilic ionophores, so as to enable the rapid and selective detection of multi-ion analytes in real samples.…”
