A hypnotically based intervention to enhance creativity in drawing was evaluated in a controlled study. Participants were randomly assigned to either a hypnotic treatment or a nonhypnotic (task-motivational) control treatment. Subjects drew a standard still-life tableau twice. The first drawing involved no special instructions and provided a baseline measure of creativity in drawing. The second drawing was completed after the creativity-enhancement procedure. The drawings were rated blindly on several dimensions of artistic creativity. Hypnotizability, absorption, and debriefing measures were also administered. Results indicated that the hypnotic procedure had significantly greater effects on creativity in drawing. However, there were no significant main effects or interactions involving hypnotizability or absorption. Hypnotic and task-motivational groups did not differ on debriefing measures regarding their experience.

Three experiments test the existence of an automatic deviancy-creativity link. Using a lexical decision task, in Experiment 1 we found a semantic link between deviancy and creativity words in that decision times for creativity-related words were enhanced after subliminal deviancy priming. In Experiment 2, participants were led to think about either a punk or an engineer and afterwards were administered creative insight and analytical reasoning problems. According to a pretest, punks and engineers were judged as differing in uniqueness but not in creativity. Participants given 'punk' priming solved more creative insight problems and fewer analytical reasoning problems than those given 'engineer' priming. In Experiment 3, participants were incidentally exposed to abstract artworks symbolically expressing either the concept of conformity or deviancy and were subsequently asked to solve a creative generation task. Exposure to the artwork representing deviancy led to generation of more creative solutions than exposure to that representing conformity.

The Myers‐Briggs Type Indicator is a Jungian‐oriented, self‐report inventory. Each of its four scales provides categorical type classifications as well as continuous scores. The intercorrelations and reliability of the scales, in terms of both measures, were determined for high school and college samples. The Extraversion‐Introversion, Sensation‐Intuition, and Thinking‐Feeling scales were independent of each other, but the Judging‐Perceiving scale was moderately related to the Sensation‐Intuition and Thinking‐Feeling scales. The internal‐consistency reliability of the continuous scores was generally in the .70's and low .80's and the type categories' reliability (using a lower‐bound estimate) was generally in the .40's and .50's.
