Thinning in artificially regenerated young beech stands

Abstract: Although beech stands are usually regenerated naturally, an area of up to 5,000 ha year -1 is artificially regenerated by beech in the Czech Republic annually. Unfortunately, these stands often showed insufficient stand density and, consequently, lower quality of stems. Therefore, thinning methods developed for naturally regenerated beech stands are applicable with difficulties. The paper evaluates the data from two thinning experiments established in young artificially regenerated beech stands located in diff… Show more

“…The comparison of the EQ method and the NFI II field survey in Hercynicum seems considerably problematic, as the zonal 5 th FVZ range corresponds to up to six confidence interval values, which suggests that the mapping of the 5 th FVZ has been done in macroclimate conditions of the 2 nd -6 th FVZs. This can be due to overestimating the actual tree composition (Zlatník 1955), given the fact that the recent representation of silver fir in the actual tree composition (including zonal sites) is very low in comparison with the site's vegetation potential (Novák, Dušek 2021;Remeš 2022).…”

“…Forest regeneration is also under competition with other undergrowth, which causes a high threat to future regeneration (Vopravil et al 2014;Novák et al 2015). But, due to the favourable conditions for the growth the soil health is also in a very good condition on a moderate slope area, which can help the regeneration (Marques et al 2010).…”

“…Soil microorganisms and enzymes are responsible for maintaining soil fertility through degradation and mineralization of organic matter. Changes in conditions for plant growth, such as silvicultural measures necessary aging stands, can cause changes in microbial communities and their biochemical activity and affect the availability of nutrients for plants (Singh & Singh 2005;Novák et al 2015). Ammonification of arginine has a significant relationship with the soil microbial biomass and affects their biochemical activity (Davis et al 1978;Alef & Kleiner 1986;Singh & Singh 2005).…”
