Thiourea modulates the expression and activity profile of mtATPase under salinity stress in seeds of Brassica juncea

Abstract: The results suggest that TU treatment maintains the integrity and functioning of mitochondria in seeds as well as seedlings exposed to salinity. Thus, TU has the potential to be used as an effective bioregulator to impart salinity tolerance under field conditions, and might prove to be of high economic importance by opening new avenues for both basic and applied research.

“…The use of TU as a stress ameliorating agent has been successfully demonstrated both at the field level (Sahu et al 2005) as well as under other abiotic stresses at the laboratory level (Srivastava et al 2009(Srivastava et al , 2010b. The preliminary analysis of seedling phenotype was performed to evaluate the differential growth pattern of the seedlings in response to TU supplementation under UV-B stress.…”

“…Among the three compounds, the performance of TU was found to be superior (Sahu et al 2005). Considering the efficiency of TU in increasing the crop yield under stress conditions and the positive role of TU treatment in alleviating salinity stress effects (Srivastava et al 2009(Srivastava et al , 2010a, it was thought worthwhile to undertake studies to investigate the potential of TU in alleviating the abiotic stresses including UV-B in Brassica juncea. In the present study, comparative biochemical and molecular responses of UV-B versus UV-B'TU were studied using the Indian mustard.…”

“…Because ATP energy is very essential for processes such as Na + efflux by Na + -ATP synthase, Na + -K + /H + transport across the plasma membrane, and control of K + uptake and Na + flow by vacuolar V-ATP synthase (Srivastava et al, 2009;Soontharapirakkul et al, 2011), ATP is the current rate of energy in the cell and this ATP is provided chiefly by mitochondrial F 1 F 0 -ATP synthase (Srivastava et al, 2009;Soontharapirakkul et al, 2011).…”

“…TU has also been recognized as an efficient bioregulator imparting tolerance to crop plants against various stresses (Asthir et al 2013;Kaya et al 2015;Srivastava et al 2014). Improvement in the oxidative defense system and plant growth and development under different stress conditions due to TU application was observed in many crops like maize (Kaya et al 2013;Sahu et al 1993), wheat (Asthir et al 2013;Sahu et al 2005), pearl millet (Parihar et al 1998), and Brassica juncea (Srivastava et al 2009;Srivastava et al 2010a;Srivastava et al 2010b). TU was also reported to improve the photosystem efficiency, vegetative growth, and improved regulation of the source-sink relation in B. juncea (Pandey et al 2013).…”
