Thismia brunneomitroides (Thismiaceae), a new mycoheterotrophic species from southern Thailand

Abstract: Here we describe a new species of the mycoheterotrophic genus Thismia (Thismiaceae), T. brunneomitroides, discovered during a botanical survey in Khao Luang National Park, Peninsular Thailand. Thismia brunneomitroides resembles Thismia brunneomitra from Brunei Darussalam in that both species possess inner tepal lobes that are connate to form a mitre with three projections at the apex and large lateral appendage of the connective. However, it differs in having ivory flowers with twelve pale orange to brownish o… Show more

“…In the section Sarcosiphon, the gross morphology of T. latiffiana is similar to that of several other species, such as T. brunneomitroides Suetsugu & Tsukaya (Suetsugu et al 2017), T. brunneomitra Hroneš, Kobrlová & Dančák (Hroneš et al 2015), T. crocea (Becc.) J.J.Sm.…”

“…Furthermore, our study clearly indicated that some mycoheterotrophic plants have become extinct before being described. As the precise identification of most mycoheterotrophic plants requires detailed observations of floral organs that are hidden in the perianth tube (Tsukaya & Hidayat 2016, Suetsugu 2017a, re-examination of herbarium specimens will be useful for understanding both past and current diversity of the mycoheterotrophic flora.…”

“…highly reduced aboveground parts and small size that allows them to be easily covered by fallen leaves). Indeed, as more comprehensive field expeditions have been undertaken, a number of Thismia taxa have been discovered and described from various countries in Asia (Chantanaorrapint et al 2016, Kumar et al 2017, Sochor et al 2017, 2018a,b, Suetsugu et al 2017, 2018a,b, Sujanapal et al 2017, Tsukaya et al 2017, Chantanaorrapint and Suddee 2018, Hroneš et al 2018, Nishioka et al 2018, Yunoh 2018). Accordingly, the genus has been updated to include ca.…”
