Thomas's virtue theory coordinates private and public activities through a set of context-invariant, justice-oriented norms with conceptual appeal to contemporary questions of global business ethics. In our article, we first sketch how Aquinas's theory can be also of relevance to a non-confession… Show more

“…In fact, innate synderesis regulates the intuitive process and in this way offers an embryonic intuitive moral judgment inclined toward goodness. We are claiming that this basic moral, natural and innate intuition of morality is 'intrinsically' connatural in all human beings (Dierksmeier and Celano 2012), and also in accordance with the scholastic thoughts of Bonaventure (1956) and Gerson (1958). However, in order to act completely virtuously, this natural inclination is not enough; it is necessary to have the support of all the other cardinal virtues (S.…”

“…The first differentiation is with conscience, ''synderesis grasps the basic moral principles which are the first premises of practical reasoning, while conscientia (conscience) is the conclusion, the act of judging that one ought to perform a particular action'' (Korsgaard 2013, p. 110). In addition, Dierksmeier and Celano (2012) also argue that synderesis represents a perpetual human moral principle constantly inclining toward rectitude, a concept also found in the thoughts of Aquinas (Scriptum super Libros Sententiarum, ed. orig.…”

“…Is it the rule or rather the exception in the intellectual history of economics? Glancing back at the records of economic thought we find: From Aquinas (Dierksmeier and Celano 2012) to Adam Smith (Hühn and Dierksmeier 2014), i.e. for about several thousand years, economic thinking was firmly linked to metaphysical, theological, and moral reflections.…”

“…As a central nexus of economic thinking, this re-conception of Bfreedom-responsibility nexus^is a pivotal move to rethink economics (Dierksmeier 2011), to re-connect modern thinking to traditions such as theories of virtue and its interest in practical wisdom (Dierksmeier and Pirson 2009;Dierksmeier and Celano 2012;Dierksmeier 2013b;Hühn and Dierksmeier 2014); to re-conceive and replace central mental models (Dierksmeier, Hoegl & Wihlenda 2016), such as the idea of freedom, and the anthropology of economic actors (Dierksmeier, Hemel & Manemann 2015); and to advance examples, case studies, and aspirations with the ultimate aim to open the door to a pluralism of more realistic (and thus: relevant) theories in economics, with important consequences for business education again (Dierksmeier 2010(Dierksmeier , 2011(Dierksmeier , 2012(Dierksmeier , 2016bvon Kimakowitz 2010;Amann et al 2011;Dierksmeier et al 2016;Moosmayer et al 2018).…”
