Thoracic Complications in Behçet’s Disease: Imaging Findings

Abstract: Behçet’s disease (BD) causes vascular inflammation and necrosis in a wide range of organs and tissues. In the thorax, it may cause vascular complications, affecting the aorta, brachiocephalic arteries, bronchial arteries, pulmonary arteries, pulmonary veins, capillaries, and mediastinal and thoracic inlet veins. In BD, chest radiograph is commonly used for the initial assessment of pulmonary symptoms and complications and for follow-up and establishment of the response to treatment. With the advancement of hel… Show more

“…MRI can detect aneurysms of the aorta and pulmonary arteries ( Figure 1 and Figure 2 ). Despite MRI being less sensitive than CTPA in identifying small lung vascular aneurysms, the advantages of MRI are connected to its use in allergic patients or those with renal failure, through the use of sequences where blood flow can be enhanced without contrast material injection [ 30 , 31 ].…”

“…BD associated with SVCS can be caused by internal thrombus, [6][7][8][9] besides that thickening of SVC wall has also been described in some literatures. 10,11 In this patient, the thickening of venous wall and thrombus were both observed, which obstructed the lumen of SVC together.…”

“…SVC syndrome (SVCS) can be caused by obstruction of SVC either by internal thrombus or extrinsic compression 5 . BD associated SVCS due to vasculopathy with or without evidence of thrombus, has been described respectively a few times in different literatures 6–11 . However, the thickening of SVC wall and thrombus have not been reported in a case of SVCS with BD.…”

“…(MR) angiography (MRA) have replaced conventional angiography to diagnose PAI [ 3 , 4 ]. Some authors believe that CTA is more sensitive than MRA in demonstrating particularly small pulmonary artery aneurysm (PAA) [ 1 , 5 ].…”

“…Some authors believe that CTA is more sensitive than MRA in demonstrating particularly small pulmonary artery aneurysm (PAA) [ 1 , 5 ]. CT scan can also demonstrate the entire spectrum of thoracic manifestations as well as PAI in BD [ 3 - 6 ]. Moreover, reformatted images and three-dimensional reconstructions are essential to guide endovascular treatment or to prepare surgery.…”
