“…Thoracoscopic approach has been shown to be associated with less postoperative pain and is now considered to be a preferred approach for benign thoracic neurogenic tumors and mediastinal tumors. [14][15][16] We successfully carried out thoracoscopic resection of functional paraganglioma in this patient, thereby showing its feasibility. There was no episode of hypertensive crisis during the operation.…”

“…10 It has been shown that thoracoscopic resection of mediastinal tumors can be achieved safely and effectively with more rapid postoperative recovery when compared with an open thoracotomy approach. [11][12][13] However, there is no literature available on the thoracoscopic resection of functional paraganglioma. Traditionally, these lesions are resected by performing thoracotomy or sternotomy.…”

“…Since dissection is usually done in close contact with the phrenic and/or sympathetic trunk and/or vagus nerve, it is important not to use monopolar electrocautery [13]. Along with others [14], we favour ultrasonic shears because the risk of thermal injury is less.…”

“…The approaches have included (1) supraclavicular approach, 1) (2) cervico-transsternal approach, 2) (3) thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), 3) and (4) VATS combined with the supraclavicular approach. 4) The approach taken is dictated by tumor location with each one having advantages and disadvantages.…”
