Thorium(IV) Removal and Recovery from Aqueous Solutions using Tannin-Modified Poly(glycidylmethacrylate)-Grafted Zirconium oxide Densified Cellulose

Abstract: A novel adsorbent, tannin-modified poly(glycidylmethacrylate)-grafted zirconium oxide-densified cellulose (TMPGZDC) was synthesized by graft copolymerization reaction of glycidylmethacrylate onto zirconium oxide densified cellulose (ZDC) in the presence of N,N 0 -methylenebisacrylamide as cross-linker followed by tannin immobilization, and well characterized. The adsorption efficiency of TMPGZDC toward thorium(IV) from aqueous solutions was studied at different optimized conditions. The optimum pH for maximum … Show more

“…They also claimed that this adsorbent could be successfully regenerated. Tannin‐modified poly(glycidyl methacrylate)‐grafted zirconium oxide‐densified cellulose is a recent adsorbent developed by Anirudhan et al . They synthesized this from graft copolymerization of glycidyl methacrylate onto zirconium oxide densified cellulose in the presence of N,N‐methylene bis acrylamide as cross linker and applied the prepared adsorbent for the adsorption of Th 4+ ion from simulated seawater.…”

“…The DH°value found to be negative (À67.23 kJ/mol) indicating the exothermic nature of Hg(II) adsorption onto P(MB-IA)-g-MNCC [31]. The DS°(À188.73 J/mol K) value found to be negative, indicates that randomness decreases during the adsorption process [32]. The DG°values were found to be À11.93, À10.04, À8.15 and À6.27 kJ/mol at 20, 30, 40 and 50°C, respectively indicate the spontaneous nature of reaction.…”

“…Aqueous chemistry of Th (IV) is pH dependent [5,6] and the conductance as well as the extraction is species dependent [7] . An aliquot containing 11.7 mL of Th(IV) (4×10 -2 mol L -1 ) in 20 mL hexamine buffer (pH 2.5-7.5) was passed through the column continuously till its saturation (498 µmol g -1 ) at a flow rate of 2.0 mL -1 min at 27 0 C to assess the effect of pH on extraction.…”
