Threats to the Validity of Logistics and Supply Chain Management Research

Abstract: To increase the relevance of logistics and supply chain academic research, this paper recommends the development and testing of middle‐range theory and practice‐level theory. Yet, there are a number of research issues that arise when academic researchers test middle‐range and practice‐level theory, both in measuring constructs and in testing theoretical relationships between constructs. Concerning the measurement of constructs, this paper recommends that academic researchers pay more attention to content valid… Show more

“…Omitted variable bias is another important limitation of all path modeling techniques, which is often ignored by researchers (Garver & Mentzer, 1999). Although parsimony is a respected practice of science and often applied to model development, researchers believe that the practice of parsimony can lead to omitted variable bias (Garver, 2019). Omitted variable bias occurs when important independent variables are excluded from a statistical model, for a variety of reasons (Garver, 2019).…”

“…Although parsimony is a respected practice of science and often applied to model development, researchers believe that the practice of parsimony can lead to omitted variable bias (Garver, 2019). Omitted variable bias occurs when important independent variables are excluded from a statistical model, for a variety of reasons (Garver, 2019). If important variables are excluded from the analysis, the resulting weights of the included independent variables can be biased and skewed, making certain independent variables seem more important than they are in a properly specified model (Tonidandel & LeBreton, 2011).…”

“…We are, therefore, faced with a quandary of seeking enough input, but not too much in our data collection and analysis techniques. In an upcoming article, Garver () illustrates creative new strategies for dealing with this quandary. We encourage you to take a look.…”

“…The primary contribution of this study is to help strengthen the body of knowledge by bridging the gap between theory and practice. This study not only unearthed a few new risks Indonesian 3PL logistics industry but also promoted a practitionerlevel theory to help local 3PL providers in this region gain new business insights (Toffel, 2016;Garver, 2019;Zinn & Goldsby, 2017;Goldsby & Zinn, 2019). Why Indonesia?…”
