Three-dimensional computed tomography angiography of the pulmonary veins and their anatomical variations: involvement in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery-lobectomy for lung cancer

Abstract: We described pulmonary venous anatomical variations and their frequency. Anatomical variations exist and preoperative assessment of pulmo-nary venous anatomy using CT scan is a useful tool in VATS lobectomy to avoid unnecessary extension of pulmonary resections or iatrogenic complications in lung cancer surgery.

“…We reviewed 192 cases and investigated segmental and middle lobe pulmonary veins. The number of variants described here is comparable to previous reports . However, we detail the drainage points, such as the SPV, IPV, RML pulmonary vein, V 6 , and LA, more clearly than in previous studies.…”

“…Fourdrain et al retrospectively reviewed the CT images and medical records of 100 patients. Anatomic variations of PVs were found in 36 patients (36%), and rightsided anatomical variations were more frequent than on the left sided (25% vs. 11%).The most common variations were three independent PVs on the right side (16%), while single PV (8%) on the left side, including surgical conversion (21%) [1]. “…One of these is the high-pitch and lowdose technique, which gives important information in a short time without utilising sedation. These features provide an important advantage, especially in very sick or uncooperative children [6,7,9,12,14].…”
