Three-dimensional Digital Documentation and Accuracy Analysis of the Choijin Lama Temple in Mongolia

Abstract: The Choijin Lama Temple is a representative example of 19th-to 20th-century architecture. The temple has been damaged by various development pressures and the effect of a harsh continental climate. This study digitalized the entire temple site using three-dimensional scanning to establish the basic data of conservational management and monitoring for spatial changes. A terrestrial laser scanning model of the temple was completed, which showed low registering error vectors (3.73 mm average) and dense point dist… Show more

“…Convergence modeling using terrestrial laser scanning + unmanned aerial photogrammetry and optical surface scanning + X-ray computed tomography has already been reported in many studies (Fawzy, 2019;Lee, 2019;Jo et al, 2020b;Shimizu et al, 2022).…”

“…In particular, in the case of poorly cultural heritage sites, multiple treatments and restorations were performed in some cases [11]. Records form the crucial component of monitoring conservation conditions, and digitized records obtained using advanced equipment are gradually being increasingly used instead of the existing handwritten documents [12][13][14][15][16].…”

“…The 3D scan was performed at a rate of about 16 frames per second in an environment without direct sunlight because it was necessary to distinguish the structured light scanned on the kiln. The scan data acquired in the eld basically undergo almost the same process as the midrange scanning data, but they are different in that the former data were obtained in the form of a polygon mesh rather than as point cloud data [7]. In particular, the mid-precision scanning results were of excellent quality in terms of both the polygon mesh and RGB texture mapping results.…”

“…Front and Back view of Byeongsan Mask 'Eul' before conservation processing. al., 2021).
