Three-dimensionalP-wave velocity structure on the shallow part of the Central Costa Rican Pacific margin from local earthquake tomography using off- and onshore networks

Abstract: S U M M A R YThe Central Costa Rican Pacific margin is characterized by a high-seismicity rate, coincident with the subduction of rough-relief ocean floor and has generated earthquakes with magnitude up to seven in the past. We inverted selected P-wave traveltimes from earthquakes recorded by a combined on-and offshore seismological array deployed during 6 months in the area, simultaneously determining hypocentres and the 3-D tomographic velocity structure on the shallow part of the subduction zone (<70 km). T… Show more

“…For example, originally JAC's phase picks were weighted from 0 to 4, with 0 denoting the most confident pick with an uncertainty of 0:05 s and 4 for the most uncertain picks (> 0:2 s; Arroyo et al, 2009). Data from the QUE and NICAT experiments were evaluated in a similar manner.…”

“…1a). The Jaco, Costa Rica (JAC) array recorded during 2002 (Arroyo et al, 2009) and was then moved south in 2003 to become the Quepos, Costa Rica (QUE) array (Dinc et al, 2010 (Dinc et al, 2011). During the NICAT and QUE experiments no more than 4-5 OBS were functioning.…”

“…For central Costa Rica, where the seamount segment of the Cocos plate subducts, local earthquake seismic tomography data by Husen et al (2003), Arroyo et al (2009) and Dinc et al (2010) show a shallower subduction angle. The deep structure of the subduction zone for the Cocos Ridge segment is less constrained with receiver function data by Dzierma et al (2011) and earthquake hypocenter data by Arroyo (2001) and Arroyo et al (2003), showing the presence of a steeply subducting slab down to a depth of 70 km.…”

“…In June 2002, a Mw 6.4 earthquake occurred at a depth as shallow as~9 km along the Costa Rica margin offshore the Osa Peninsula (Arroyo et al 2009). The subduction zone beneath the Caribbean plate is also characterized by strong variations in fault-slip behavior.…”
