Three-Dimensional Local Yield Maps of Hard Coating Under Sliding Contact

Abstract: The local yield maps for the identification of the yield initiation positions of hard coating on three-dimensional (3D) elastic half space under sliding contact were developed. In this study, the semi-analytical method (SAM), which is based on the conjugate gradient method (CGM) and the discrete convolution and fast Fourier transform (DC-FFT) technique, was employed to analyze the contact problem. By using this method, the von Mises stress distributions for various combinations of coating thicknesses, friction… Show more

“…It should be noted here that in some prior studies, e.g., [59,60], the coating thickness was normalized by the Hertzian contact radius in the absence of coating. However, since the Hertzian contact radius depends on the normal load, this normalization does not seem to be very convenient to evaluate the dimensional coating thickness of an actual coated system.…”

“…A detailed description of the numerical method was reported in Refs. [25,38]. Then the von Mises stress r vm in the contact zone was calculated with the normal stresses and shear stresses, where r vm was defined as follows [11], and a difference of less than 1% was obtained (see Ref.…”

“…Then the von Mises stress r vm in the contact zone was calculated with the normal stresses and shear stresses, where r vm was defined as follows [11], and a difference of less than 1% was obtained (see Ref. [25]). Figure 4 shows the distribution of normal stress r xx normalized by the maximum Hertzian contact pressure P max on the diagram of x/a 0 and z/a 0 in the y ¼ 0 plane.…”

“…The mechanism of layer decohesion and subsurface crack initiation was explained according to the results. Zhang et al 22 plotted yield maps around the plastic yield onset on the 3D elastic hard coating flat under fully sliding condition. Semi-analytical method (SAM), conjugate gradient method (CGM), and discrete convolutional fast Fourier transform (DC-FFT) technique were used to calculate the von Mises stress distribution under different coating thickness, friction coefficient, and elastic modulus of coating and substrate.…”
