Three-dimensional measurements of vortex breakdown

Abstract: Leading-edge vortex formation and breakdown have been measured over a periodically plunging nonslender delta wing at a high angle of attack, using a threedimensional particle-tracking method. A very rare type of vortex breakdown in the form of a double helix has been captured in the phase-averaged flow at a specific phase of the oscillation cycle.

“…The trailing edge location was tracked and subsequently verified to be within 1.25% of the peak to peak amplitude of the sine curve. 12 The angle of attack is fixed throughout the cycle. The frequency is managed by an IMO Jaguar Controller and the amplitude is set by fixing the link bar at various distances from the centre of rotation.…”

“…An experimental investigation has found the flow mechanisms responsible for the aircraft loss of static directional stability (Jing et al 2016). The method of three-dimensional measurements of vortex breakdown has focused more on vortex dynamics mechanism (Calderon et al 2012). Medford (2012) has investigated the aerodynamics of a maneuvering unmanned aircraft vehicle (UAV) model and its control through leading-edge curvature change.…”

“…An experimental investigation has found the flow mechanisms responsible for the aircraft loss of static directional stability [22]. The method of three-dimensional measurements of vortex breakdown has gained more focus on vortex dynamics mechanism [23]. Nevertheless, the algorithm application of the Q-criterion algorithm so far has not been mixed with the track of the flowline for the vortex growth, to examine the vortex dynamics of the comprehensive picture.…”
