The impacts of the double V-rings (DVR) in the heat exchanger duct (HED) on heat transfer and flow structures are numerically analyzed. The general configuration of the DVR is called “type I,” while the discrete DVR can be split into two structures, which are called “types II and III.” The influences of the DVR sizes, DVR types and flow directions on heat transfer rate, friction loss, and thermohydraulic performance are considered. The Reynolds numbers in the range around 100–2000 (laminar regime at the entrance condition) are selected for the present investigation. The numerical problem of the HED installed with the DVR is solved with the finite volume method (a commercial code). The flow structure, heat transfer mechanism, and performance analysis in the HED that fitted the DVR are reported. The flow and heat transfer profiles in the HED fitted with the DVR are an important knowledge to develop the thermohydraulic performance of compact heat exchangers. As the numerical results, it is seen that the heat transfer ability of the tested duct improves around 1.05–16.62 times upper than the smooth duct. Additionally, the greatest value of the thermal enhancement factor in the HED fitted with the DVR is seen to be around 4.17 at a/H = 0.025, b/H = 0.10, Re = 2000, and V-upstream direction for the type I.

“…The f/f0 at BR = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25 and 0.30 is about 1.00 -6.50, 1.30 -15.30, 2.00 -34.50, 4.00 -63.00, 7.00 -105.00 and 15.00 -220.00, respectively, at α = 45 o . For α = 45 o , the maximum TEF is detected at Re = 2000 for all BRs around 2.50,2.80,3.60,3.50,3.25 and 2.90,respectively,at BR = 0.05,0.10,0.15,0.20,0.25 and 0.30. In comparison, the heat exchanger section inserted with C-shaped baffle performs higher TEF than the wavy surface vortex generators (Boonloi and Jedsadaratanachai (2019a), Boonloi and Jedsadaratanachai (2018a), Jedsadaratanachai and Boonloi (2017)) and V-shaped baffle (Boonloi and Jedsadaratanachai (2018b), (Boonloi and Jedsadaratanachai (2018c)). The purpose of the present work is to study flow configuration and heat transfer behavior in a square channel heat exchanger equipped with C-shaped baffle. The influences of flow attack angle and baffle size on flow and heat transfer characteristics are considered for the laminar flow regime with the Reynolds number around 100-2000. The numerical study with finite volume method is selected for the present investigation. The SIMPLE algorithms is opted to solve the numerical problem. The numerical results are concluded in terms of flow and heat transfer mechanisms in the tested section. The thermal performance analysis; Nusselt number ratio (Nu/Nu0), friction factor (f/f0) and thermal enhancement factor (TEF), are also summarized. The numerical model of the smooth square channel is validated with the correlations on both Nusselt number and friction factor. The numbers of grid cell for the computational domain are also compared. The numerical results reveal that the C-shaped baffle in the tested section leads to the appearance of the thermal boundary layer disturbance on the channel walls that the important cause for heat transfer rate and thermal efficiency enhancements. The maximum TEF of the square duct with C-shaped baffle is around 3.89. In addition, the optimum gap spacing value for the square channel inserted with C-shaped baffle is around 5%.

Forced convective heat transfer and thermo-hydraulic efficiency in the heat exchanger square channel (HESC) inserted with 10° wavy thin rib (WTR) are reported numerically. The effects of rib height, pitch distance and flow velocity on flow and heat transfer profiles are considered. The rib height to the channel height; e/H or HR, is varied in the range 0.05–0.30, while the rib pitch to the channel height; P/H or PR, is varied in the range 0.50–1.25. The air velocity in the HESC inserted with the WTR is considered in terms of Reynolds number. The Reynolds numbers (Re = 100–2000) for the present investigation is analyzed at the inlet condition. The finite volume method (commercial code) with SIMPLE algorithm is picked to solve the present problem. The numerical model of the HESC inserted with the WTR is validated for both grid independence and verification of the smooth HESC. The numerical results of the HESC inserted with the WTR are printed in terms of flow and heat transfer profiles. The values of Nusselt number, friction factor and thermal efficiency factor in the HESC inserted with the WTR are also plotted. As the numerical result, it is found that the WTR in the HESC can produce the vortex flow that the reason for the enhancements of heat transfer and efficiency. The increment of the heat transfer ability in the HESC is detected when increasing rib height and Reynolds number. In addition, the greatest thermal efficiency factor in the HESC inserted with the WTR is around 3.43 at HR = 0.20, PR = 1, and Re = 2000.
