Three‐Dimensional Structural Modelling and Source Rock Evaluation of the Quseir Formation in the Komombo Basin, Egypt

Abstract: The Quseir Formation consists mainly of dark gray mudstones with a high organic matter content and excellent hydrocarbon-generating potential. The main objectives of this study are to highlight the dominant structural elements in the Komombo Basin, Egypt, and evaluate the geochemical characteristics of the Quseir Formation. Depth maps and a 3D structural model indicate two normal fault trends NW-SE and ENE-WSW. The NW-SE trend is the dominant one that created the primary half-graben system. The depth to the to… Show more

“…Seismic reflection data allow the imaging of subsurface structures down to 7 s two‐way time (TWT). The seismic interpretation process includes the recognition and picking of the principal seismo‐stratigraphic features and faults (carried out using the Schlumberger Petrel TM package) in order to define boundaries of the main seismo‐stratigraphic units in the study area, and in particular, in the vicinity of the structural high (Ali, 2020; Ali et al., 2018; Ali, Abdelhady, et al., 2020; Ali, Abdelmaksoud, et al., 2020). Accordingly, six crosslines, three inlines, and three composite lines were interpreted to study the break out of the studied feature (Figures 2b, 3, 4, and 6).…”

“…The pre-rift sedimentary sequence of the NRS rift is very similar to that of the southern Gulf of Suez (Figure 1b). Pre-rift strata involve three primary rock sequences (Nubia sandstones, mixed facies section, carbonate section; Khalil & McClay, 2017, 2020. These units are formed by shallow-water carbonate and siliciclastic rocks directly overlying the Precambrian basement and gradually thickening toward the northwest.…”

“…Surface and depth contour maps were used to establish structural orientation and identification of thick sedimentary successions that may have a petroleum potential (e.g. Ali et al 2019a, b;Ali 2020). Similar techniques will also be employed to accomplish this work.…”

“…The Shahejie Formation of the Qingshui subsag, Liaohe Depression, Permian in the western margin of the Songliao Basin, and the Yanchang Formation of the Ordos Basin are all near-source accumulation, indicating that the study of source rocks is very important for natural gas exploration. Hence, determining the origin of natural gas, , revealing the relationship between gas sources, and clarifying the characteristics of hydrocarbon sources , can offer a scientific foundation for the study of the distribution pattern of oil and gas systems, the establishment of reservoir accumulation models, and the search for favorable areas.…”
