With excess slurry pressures exerted on the tunnel face, slurry particles tend to infiltrate into the soil in front of the tunnel. There will be excess pore pressure ahead of the tunnel in the case of infiltration, leading to an impairment in the supporting effect contributed by the excess slurry pressure. Corresponding to three slurry infiltration scenarios distinguished by the forms of the filter cake, different pressure transfer models are employed to describe the pore pressure distribution. Using the kinematic approach of limit analysis and the numerically simulated seepage field, the study of tunnel face stability under different slurry infiltration cases is extended by employing a 3D discretization-based failure mechanism. In addition, two simple empirical formulas describing the pore pressure distributions above the tunnel and in advance of the tunnel are established and verified. Combined with the dichotomy method and strength reduction method, the safety factors yielding rigorous upper-bound solutions are obtained by optimization. The proposed method is validated by a comparative analysis. The developed framework allows considering the influence of excess pore pressure on the whole failure mechanism and the three-dimensional characteristics of seepage. A parameter analysis is performed to study the effect of the excess slurry pressure, hydraulic conditions, soil strength properties, and pressure drop coefficient. The results show that the steady-state flow model leads to much more conservative results than the full-membrane model. The safety factor increases with the increasing excess slurry pressure and the decreasing pressure drop coefficient. The present work provides an effective framework to quickly assess the face stability of tunnels under excess slurry pressure considering different filter cake scenarios.

In this study, the slurry diffusion in a cavity filled with coal gangue was studied by combining experimental and numerical simulation methods. By calibrating slurry and particle materials, the grouting process in coal gangue filling area is simulated successfully, and the change of slurry diffusion flow field and particle movement and settling process in different dimensions are deeply analyzed. Both experimental and numerical simulation results show that the particle settlement presents a bell-shaped curve, which is of great significance for understanding the particle movement and settlement behavior in the filling cavity. In addition, it is found that the grouting speed has a significant effect on the particle settlement during the slurry diffusion process. When the grouting speed increases from 0.1m /s to 0.2m /s, the particle settlement and diffusion range increases about twice. In the plane flow field, it is observed that the outward diffusion trend and speed of grouting are more obvious. It is worth noting that in the whole process of grouting, it is observed that with the increase of grouting distance and depth, both the velocity of slurry and particles show a trend of rapid initial decline and gradually slow down, and the flow velocity of slurry near the grouting outlet at a flow rate of 0.2m/s is 2–4 times that of 0.1m/s. This provides important enlightenment for the porous seepage effect at different grouting speeds.

The stability of large-section clay tunnels is closely related to the mechanical behavior of the surrounding rock. The mechanical behavior of the surrounding rock is characterized by the coupled response of the physico-mechanical properties of the clay material and the tunnel construction conditions. Therefore, this paper proposes a numerical experimental study based on the response surface method to quantitatively link the stability of large-section clay tunnels with construction factors. It will provide a basis for quantitatively guiding the tunnel construction plan adjustment to ensure its stability. Firstly, the tunnel stability reserve is evaluated by considering the deterioration of physico-mechanical properties of clay surrounding rocks, and the relationship between the tunnel stability index and construction factors is established according to Taylor’s theorem. Secondly, the response surface method and the steepest ascent method are used to find the optimal fitting relationship between the tunnel stability reserve factor and tunnel construction factors. Finally, the analysis of a tunnel application shows that (a) the stability evaluation considering the deterioration of physical and mechanical properties of clay is well representative; (b) the “curved” region of the response of the tunnel stability reserve factor can be effectively determined by the steepest slope method; (c) for the “curved” region, a second-order response surface is more appropriate. This research will reveal the coupling relationship between tunnel stability, physico-mechanical properties of clay, and tunnel construction conditions, which will contribute to the development of intelligent tunnel construction.
