Nowadays, with the development of materials science and technology and with the continuous emergence of new materials, technologies, processes and methods, proliferation and complexity of material science data have increased enormously. Therefore, difficulties encountered by researchers are how to manage and store various material science data efficiently, how to dig out valuable data to a great extent, and how to share the resources of material data and realize knowledge innovation when engaging in material science researches. The quick development of information technology and computer network technology provides possibility for the solution of these existing problems. With the combination of material science and information science for the material science research, materials informatics, a new discipline, has emerged and developed quickly. Materials informatics is a cross or edge discipline with the combination and permeation of material science and information science. , through combining traditional disciplines and information technology, a number of new disciplines have been established. Among the established disciplines, bioinformatics and chemoinformatics are the good examples. Their emergences and developments have facilitated the development of biology and chemistry greatly. Through referring to the development and research experience of bioinformatics and chemoinformatics, and combining the characteristics of material science (the variety of relevant data and the range of materials, processes, and properties [3] ), we propose here the definition of materials informatics and expound its concept. Materials informatics is a new subject that leverages information technology and computer network technology to represent, parse, store, manage and analyze the material data, in order to realize the sharing and knowledge mining of materials data, uncover the essence of material, and accelerate the new material discovery and design. Firstly, materials informatics is a branch of material sciences, and the objects and intentions of the research belong to the field of material sciences. Secondly, the means of the research are information and network technology. The content of the research is how to leverage the technologies to realize the representation, interpretation, storage, management and analysis of material data. Lastly, the aim of the research is to realize the sharing and knowledge mining of material data, uncover the essence of material, and accelerate and improve the development of new material discovery and design.
