Three Poliovirus Sequences in the Human Genome Associated With Colorectal Cancer

Abstract: Background/Aim: In a previous study we analyzed poliomyelitis incidence in US states, before the introduction of the polio vaccine. We noted an inverse correlation between polio incidence in US states, between 1937 and 1951, and colorectal cancer incidence (2005-2009). To further elucidate the role that poliovirus could play in colorectal cancer, the full human genome for poliovirus sequences was analyzed using the UCSC Genome Browser. Materials and Methods: BLAT, the Blast-Like Alignment Tool of the UCSC Geno… Show more

“…Most of the viruses had human sequences, but they were short. For example, three polio sequences were 34 bases, 24 bases, and 20 bases (6). Hepatitis A and St Louis encephalitis had human sequences that were longer than the 117 base SARS-Cov-2 sequence, but they were in non-coding regions of the human genome.…”

“…These can be active in disease onset including tumorigenesis 42 . As an example, the polio RNA sequences are identified with a 100 % sequence homology to human chromosomes and are associated with cancer progression 43 . These require attention for possible production of chimeric mRNAs with SARS-CoV-2 native or vaccine derived mRNAs, especially during meiotic division 44 , stem cell differentiation and cancer 45 .…”
