“…Fuller-Thomson and colleagues found that participants who reported sexual abuse were almost three times and twice as likely to have drug and alcohol dependence, respectively, compared to participants who did not report sexual abuse [49]. Also, living with someone who has been incarcerated and who has mental health issues may be linked to substance use in adulthood as family members who were incarcerated or experienced mental health issues may have been more likely to abuse substances.…”

“…Clinical studies indicate a strong positive relationship between repeated adverse childhood experiences and substance use disorders in adulthood (Fuller-Thomson et al, 2016; Gerra et al, 2016; Giordano et al, 2014; Koskenvuo & Koskenvuo, 2015; LeTendre & Reed, 2017; Merrick et al, 2017; Rossow & Lauritzen, 2001). In the small number of clinical studies that have examined accumbal function in either human adolescents or adults reporting experiences of repeated social and non-social juvenile stress, hypoactivity of the NAc in response to either reward-related stimuli or reward anticipation is observed (Goff et al, 2013; Boecker et al 2014; Corral-Frias et al, 2015; Hanson et al, 2015, 2016; but see Casement et al, 2014).…”

“…Researchers have consistently identified associations between ETV and negative psychosocial and health outcomes (Boynton-Jarrett, Ryan, Berkman, & Wright, 2008;Dahlberg & Potter, 2001;Fuller-Thomson, Roane, & Brennenstuhl, 2016;Goldstick, Carter et al, 2017;Gorman-Smith, Henry, & Tolan, 2004;Herrenkohl et al, 2000;Schilling, Aseltine, & Gore, 2007), and these associations are often conceptualized as mediated by psychological distresses (Deane et al, 2016). In particular, ETV places adolescents at increased risk of internalizing problems, including major depressive disorders and posttraumatic stress disorder (Deane et al, 2016;Sheidow et al, 2014).…”
