Three-year clinical performance of cast gold vs ceramic partial crowns

Abstract: Cast gold partial crowns (CGPC) and partial ceramic crowns (PCC) are both accepted for restoring posterior teeth with extended lesions today. However, as esthetics in dentistry becomes increasingly important, CGPC are being progressively replaced by PCC. The aim of the present prospective split-mouth study was the comparison of the clinical performance of PCC and CGPC after 3 years of clinical service. Twenty-eight patients (11 men and 17 women) participated in the 3-year recall with a total of 56 restorations… Show more

“…IPS Empress partial coverage restorations achieved survival rates of 92.7-100% in midterm (2-4 years) 26,29 and 81-93.4% in long-term evaluation (7 years). 22,36 The present survival rate obtained for the Cerec ProCAD partial coverage restorations can only be related to a 93.1% 3-year survival rate of Vita Mark II partial crowns 31 and to a 90-90.4% survival rate for Vita Mark I inlay and onlay restorations after 9-10 years. 37,38 The survival probability of onlays made of feldspathic ceramics was distinctively lower with 56-60.7% after an observation period of 6-7 years.…”

“…1,22,23 Preliminary results of all-ceramic partial coverage restoration in short and medium-term clinical observation are promising. [24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31] However, conclusive evidence-based statements on clinical longevity of extended partial coverage restorations cannot be made yet.…”

“…The study design of this controlled, prospective, randomized clinical split-mouth study followed the requirements outlined in the American Dental Association (ADA) Acceptance Program Guidelines [19], the CONSORT Statement [20] as well as established and previously published protocols [17,21]. The study design of the present evaluation was approved by the ethics committee of the University of Regensburg (IRB no.…”

“…Today, clinical criteria for evaluation of direct and indirect restorations as revised by the World Dental Federation (FDI) in 2007 should be applied [29], including the requirement of two independent evaluators. In the present study, all restorations were evaluated by one experienced dentist who had been calibrated against an experienced senior investigator [17,21]. The reporting of the study complies with the CONSORT Statement [20].…”
