Threshold effects of the relationship between physical exercise and cognitive function in the short-sleep elder population

Yanwei You,
Yuquan Chen,
Xiangyu Chen
et al.

Abstract: BackgroundIt has been demonstrated that elderly people’s cognitive capacities can be improved with exercise, and short sleep is linked to cognitive decline. However, the impact of physical exercise on cognitive performance in seniors who do not get enough sleep is largely unknown. This makes it an intriguing subject to explore further.MethodsThis study consisted of elders (over 60 years old) who participated throughout the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey’s 2011–2014 cycle (NHANES). “…Research with fewer databases, a limited number of included articles, and relatively small sample sizes may introduce bias to the research findings. Fourthly, this study did not adequately consider sleep as one of the factors affecting exercise effectiveness and depressive symptoms ( 57 , 58 ). In future research exploring the impact of physical activity or exercise on depressive symptoms, the influence of sleep should be fully considered.…”

“…In conducting an analytical inquiry utilizing the NHANES database, it was of the utmost importance to account for potential covariates that may impact the results. Referring to several previous reports ( 32 34 ), the study controlled for confounding factors such as age, gender, race/ethnicity, marital status, family poverty income ratio, body mass index (BMI), smoking and alcohol drinking status. This rigorous approach to covariate assessment underscored the importance of accounting for potential confounders in NHANES-based investigations and highlighted the need for precise and thorough methodology in research utilizing this valuable resource.…”

“…The Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD) Word List Learning Test, the CERAD Word List Recall Test, the Animal Fluency Test, and the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST) were employed for this purpose, with these tests having undergone rigorous development and validation processes within the national population. 29 , 30 , 31 The utilization of these cognitive tests in the evaluation of individuals' cognitive abilities within the NHANES mobile examination component yielded comprehensive insights into their immediate and delayed learning capabilities, executive functioning, and cognitive processing speed, sustained attention, and working memory. Higher scores across these neurocognitive assessments are suggestive of enhanced cognitive performance across multiple domains.…”
