Threshold of hearing as a function of age and sex for the typical unscreened population

Abstract: Thresholds of hearing as a function of age and sex for screened, or 'otologically normal', persons have been standardised (ISO 7029) on the basis of a study by Robinson and Sutton (1978). For purposes such as the evaluation of hearing loss due to noise exposure in industrial populations, it is not generally realistic to compare the hearing thresholds to an age-matched 'otologically normal' baseline, since the difference will include adventitious hearing loss as well as the noise-related components. “…These pitfalls might be avoided if a suitable unexposed reference group is selected . Recently, Robinson proposed that it is not generally realistic to compare measured hearin g loss with an " otologically normal" base line from an age-matched group, since differences between a normal and a noise-exposed population will include adventitious hearing loss along with the noiserelated components (45). Since the mean ages of our groups differed, the selection of the model affected the age correction and , further, the hearing threshold level.…”

“…The report also briefly summarized the absence of any evidence of serious side effects, including clinically marked hearing loss and nephrotoxicity, in either treatment arm. Within the study protocol, hearing loss was defined in terms of a loss that would be evident clinically and was defined as a consistent elevation of any two pure tone audiometry (PTA) thresholds above 20 dB hearing level (HL) over 2 to 8 kHz (16,22).…”

“…The mild high frequency hearing loss in both families is common in the general population (Robinson, 1988) and would not account for the abnormality of ABRs. The loss of middle ear muscle reflexes in five members of NFL + AN is typical of AN (Starr et al, 1996).…”
