Threshold Prediction Using the Auditory Steady-State Response and the Tone Burst Auditory Brain Stem Response: A Within-Subject Comparison

Abstract: Both the ABR and the ASSR provided reasonably accurate predictions of behavioral threshold across the three subject groups. There was no evidence that the predictive accuracy of the ABR evoked using Blackman-gated tone bursts differed from the predictive accuracy observed when linear-gated tone bursts were presented in conjunction with notched noise. Similarly, there was no evidence that the predictive accuracy of the AM ASSR differed from the AM/FM ASSR. In general, ABR thresholds were recorded at levels clos… Show more

“…This would provide additional information on the effects of maturation on the ASSR provided by Rance and Tomlin [2006] by also including data for the preterm periods. Further data should also be sought to explore the effect of hearing loss on the maturation of the ASSR response [Rance et al, 1998;Johnson and Brown, 2005;Rance, 2008]. This would determine whether the maturation of the ASSR response is similar with cases of sensorineural hearing loss and whether the same correlation could potentially be observed between ASSR and behavioral thresholds for both normal-hearing and hearing-impaired neonates.…”

“…Reports have demonstrated significant correlations between ASSR, behavioural and ABR thresholds across various age groups including adults and children [1,3,4,9]. Despite good correlations there are significant differences between studies reporting ranges of ASSR and behavioural threshold difference from 4 to 34 dB [2,6].…”

“…These data concur with other published results 11,20,23,26 . Very few studies have compared thresholds measured with tone burst ABR and ASSR in the same population 6,15,17,19,27 . The choice of two measurements of test duration was made to observe the true clinical application of these tools.…”
