Thromboangiitis obliterans: classic and new morphological features

Abstract: The clinical and pathological concept of thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO, Buerger's disease) is still controversial. While the clinical criteria of TAO are relatively well defined, the etiology is unknown and its diagnosis based on pathology is confusing, since there is no consensus on the precise pathological criteria for TAO. To investigate the morphological features that differentiate TAO from arteriosclerosis obliterans (ASO) or thromboembolism, and to clarify the morphological independence of TAO, we stud… Show more

“…In all three stages, the normal architecture of the vessel wall including the internal elastic lamina remains intact and these findings distinguish from atherosclerosis and other systemic vasculitis. 13,14 In the first case, histopathological examination revealed prominent vascularization of the media and inflammatory cell infiltration without fibrinoid necrosis and other evidence of atherosclerosis. Intact normal architecture was maintained.…”

“…HIF-1 protein was first extracted from hypoxia hepatocellular cancer cells Hep3b in 1992 (Kurata et al, 2000). HIF-1 comprises HIF-1α and HIF-1β, but the concentration of HIF-1 is mainly decided by HIF-1α (Liu et al, 2014b;Umar et al, 2014).…”
