Summary311 hearts of fetuses, of premature and neonate babies, of preschool and school children were examined, irrespective of basic disease and cause of death. 63 hearts did not show any pathological alterations. They served as a control group. The fibers of 27 hearts of fetuses, premature and mature neonate babies were homogeneous" The close packing as well as the reduced number of myofibrils in some regions of the heart did not correspond to hearts of the same age and size of the control group.The following changes were found individually or in combination within the remaining 200 hearts:Perinuclear vacuoles and acidophilic fibers, acidophilic necroses, scars with or without calcification, interstitial haemorrhages, parietal thrombi, endocarditis and myocarditis.Prominent characteristics are perinuclear vacuoles, acidophilic fibers and acidophilic necroses. This combination often shows a characteristic morphological pattern: inner layer with acidophilic necroses, middle layer with acidophilia, and outer layer consisting of fibers with perinuclear vacuoles. This combination and the trilaminar arrangement lead to the conclusion that they may be caused by hypoxaemia, isehemia or hypoxidosis. Vacuoles and acidophilia are most likely to be reversible.According to their frequency, they appear to correlate with certain diseases (table 3), but none of the changes are specific for a certain disease:Perinuclear vacuoles, acidophilic fibers and acidophilic necroses very often exist with pulmonary diseases, with general infections and erythroblastosis. Interstitial haemorrhages and parietal thrombi can be traced in increasing numbers in traumas showing disseminated intravascular coagulation.Hypertrophic fibers are frequent in congenital heart disease, mostly in combination with acidophilic fibers and especially with scars.Further studies should aim at establishing a correlation between morphological and clinical observations. This paper suggests further studies in the field of morphology examining equivalent surgical material with the electron microscope.

Three out of four newborn infants (premature twins, one case of prolonged delivery and one case of relapsing respiratory arrest) showed microthrombi in the vessels of the extremities as morphological symptoms of a generalized plasmatic hypercoagulability, consumption of clotting factors, and disseminated intravaseular coagulation which takes place in the newborns during birth and during the perinatal period. The thrombi in the extremities are regarded as clinical manifestation of a generalized microthrombosis which involves the vascular system of many organs, i.e. liver, lungs, spleen, intestine, suprarenal glands, and kidneys.Fibrin-rich intravascular microthrombi in the vessels of the extremities are considered as morphological equivalents of a generalized hypereoagulability and subsequent disseminated intravascular coagulation. They are already initiated in utero following intra-uterine asphyxia with hypoxemia and acidosis in the capillary microcireulation (inadequate capillary perfusion).Disseminated intravascular coagulation can also occur in the immediate perinatal period due to a generalized hypercoagulability of the plasma, which had been initiated in utero and persisted during the perinatal time without having been already converted in utero into a disseminated intravascular microthrombosis. Hypercoagulability can be perpetuated and intensified by a membrane syndrome in newborn infants with respiratory distress syndrome.The pathogenetic relations between hypoxemia and acidosis in the microcirculation of nascituri and newborns, hypercoagulability of plasma with thrombocytopeuia and with consumption of clotting factors in utero, hemorrhagic diathesis during birth, disseminated intravascular coagulation in stillbirths and in newborn infants, and the respiratory distress syndrome with hyaline membranes of the lung are discussed.

It is the purpose of this study to standardize platelet aggregation according to the method of Born. It was found that aggregation is influenced by the time of storage, the pH and temperature of plasma. However, there is no significant correlation between platelet number versus aggregation in healthy subjects. To get reproducible results, the plasma samples should be investigated within 2 hours after venipuncture. During storage temperature of all samples should be constant.
