Thrombosed aneurysmal nonpatent ductus arteriosus: A case report

Abstract: We report our observations made clinically and by conventional radiography, ultrasound, computed tomography and MRI on a newborn full-term infant with a thrombosed patent aneurysmal ductus arteriosus of Botallo. The baby had no heart murmurs, but from the beginning of the 2nd day of life developed sinus tachycardia, especially when in a left-sided position, and dyspnoea mainly when drinking. From his 1st day of life we observed generalized muscular hypotonia and a tendency for hyperextension at neurological ex… Show more

“…A spontaneous aneurysm having a diameter greater than 10 mm is an indication for surgical closure. However, surgical closure of spontaneous aneurysm should also be recommended if any of the following conditions exists: (1) PDA and ductal aneurysm persisting beyond the neonatal period; (2) association with a connective tissues disorder; (3) thrombus extension into adjacent vessels; (4) evidence of thromboembolism; and (5) functional compression of adjacent structures 17,18,20–22 . Prompt surgical treatment in all patients with a post‐operative DAA has been recommended 12 .…”

“…A nonpatent spontaneous ductal aneurysm related to premature closure of the pulmonary end of the ductus can occur rarely in normal infants [5]. One can hypothesize that in selected patients some variation in PDA anatomy may be at risk of this complication after coil occlusion.…”

“…Among patients with ductus arteriosus aneurysms, the reported incidence of thrombosis is approximately 30% 6,8) . The mechanism of thrombus formation is presumed to be stagnant blood pooling inside the aneurysm structure, leading to thrombosis 10,11) .…”
