Through the Looking Glass: Analysis of Factors Influencing Iranian Student’s Study Abroad Motivations and Destination Choice

Abstract: This study seeks to investigate and understand why and how Iranian higher education students choose to study overseas. After critically analyzing the international student mobility literature, the important factors are distilled. Then, by using Fuzzy-Delphi Method (FDM), 15 factors are selected from the 21 factors initially selected by reviewing the literature. This study utilizes a novel Multicriteria Decision Making (MCDM) approach, based on Best-Worst Method (BWM), to prioritize the factors influencing the … Show more

“…By employing a linear and non-linear mathematical model, the optimal values of each criterion are calculated (Rezaei, 2015). This method is used in a variety of contexts such as humanitarian supply chain (Sahebi et al, 2017), medical tourism management (Abadi et al, 2018), education management (Nafari et al, 2017), technology selection (Mokhtarzadeh et al, 2018), marketing (Mahdiraji et al, 2019) and facility location (Kheybari et al, 2019). The well-known non-linear version of this model is described as follows (Rezaei, 2015):…”

“…Using hypothetical models from the previous literature on the motivations and factors influencing international students' decisions (Srikatanyoo and Gnoth 2002;Cubillo et al 2006;Nafari et al 2017), we selected those factors that can be at least partially applied to student mobility without the empirical approach of interviewing and can be supported by the available data. The selected pull factors include cost issues, financial aid or scholarships, the quality of an institution, personal recommendations, environment, and geographical proximity.…”

“…This condition increases desires which are against existing mental patterns and habits to leave the country (Ghazinejad and Khani Ushani 2018). Higher education and international mobility have significantly escalated more than the total international migration in the last decades (Nafari, Arab, and Ghaffari 2017). Based on previous statistics it can be stated that providing opportunities to study abroad are increasingly valued, and entering into the new professional, social, cultural, and personal experiences would provide a new opportunity in the life of the individual.…”

“…The degree from top-ranking universities gives a lot of benefits to highly educated students in choosing their future (Zijlstra 2020). This led researchers to investigate what perspectives and expectations of international students consider on their choices (Nafari, Arab, and Ghaffari 2017). Iran is one of the countries that has faced a large number of immigrants in the recent decades (Torbat 2009).…”
