Cities are constantly transforming and, consequently, attracting efforts from researchers and opportunities to the industry. New transportation systems are being built in order to meet sustainability and efficiency criteria, as well as being adapted to the current possibilities. Moreover, citizens are becoming aware about the power and possibilities provided by the current generation of autonomous devices. In this sense, this paper presents and discusses state-of-the-art transportation technologies and systems, highlighting the advances that the concepts of Internet of Things and Value are providing. Decentralized technologies, such as blockchain, are been extensively investigated by the industry, however, its widespread adoption in cities is still desirable. Aligned with operations research opportunities, this paper identifies different points in which cities’ services could move to. This also study comments about different combinatorial optimization problems that might be useful and important for an efficient evolution of our cities. By considering different perspectives, didactic examples are presented with a main focus on motivating decision makers to balance citizens, investors and industry goals and wishes.

Dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) is one of the key technologies enabling safety-critical applications for intelligent transportation system (ITS). Considering the significance of such safety-of-life applications, it is of utmost importance to guarantee reliable delivery of basic safety messages (BSMs). However, in accordance with a V2X network being inherently dynamic in key aspects such as vehicle density and velocity, the networking behavior of a DSRC system is usually highly complicated to analyze. In addition, the United States Federal Communications Commission (US FCC) recently proposed the so-called "5.9 GHz band innovation," which includes a plan to reduce bandwidth for DSRC to 10 MHz at best from 75 MHz. Motivated from these challenges, the necessity of "lightening" load of a DSRC network has become essential to keep safety-related operations from performance deterioration. To this end, this paper proposes a protocol that prioritizes transmission of a BSM from a vehicle according to the level of accident risk of the vehicle. The proposed protocol uses the distance of a vehicle from a danger source as the metric to determine the priority for transmission. Our results show that this protocol effectively prioritizes the transmission opportunity for dangerous vehicles, and hence results in higher performance in terms of key metrics-i.e., average latency, packet delivery rate (PDR), and inter-reception time (IRT).

Vehicle density and technological development increase the need for road and pedestrian safety systems. Identifying problems and addressing them through the development of systems to reduce the number of accidents and loss of life is imperative. This paper proposes the analysis and management of dangerous situations, with the help of systems and modules designed in this direction. The approach and classification of situations that can cause accidents is another feature analyzed in this paper, including detecting elements of a psychosomatic nature: analysis and detection of the conditions a driver goes through, pedestrian analysis, and maintaining a preventive approach, all of which are embedded in a modular architecture. The versatility and usefulness of such a system come through its ability to adapt to context and the ability to communicate with traffic safety systems such as V2V (vehicle-to-vehicle), V2I (vehicle-to-infrastructure), V2X (vehicle-to-everything), and VLC (visible light communication). All these elements are found in the operation of the system and its ability to become a portable device dedicated to road safety based on (radio frequency) RF-VLC (visible light communication).
