Thrust force prediction of twist drill tools using a 3D CAD system application programming interface

Abstract: Twist drills are geometrical complex tools and various researchers have adopted different mathematical and experimental approaches for their simulation. The present paper acknowledges the increasing use of modern CAD systems and subsequently, using the application programming interface (API) of a typical CAD system, drilling simulations are carried out. The developed DRILL3D software routine, creates, via specifying parameters, tool geometries, so that using different cutting conditions, realistic solid models… Show more

“…Thus, any equivalent lab work may be skipped. In addition to the automated design, CAD-based automated planning of manufacturing processes is a possibility [9][10][11][12][13], as well as the automation and enhancement of the assembly processes of engineering parts by taking advantage of the programming resources that modern CAD systems have to offer. Typical examples in this area involve the automated assembly process of large mechanical systems based on characteristics and features, as well as the extraction of the assembly sequences via CAD models for assembly planning [14][15][16][17].…”

“…1. When designing a drill forging, the guidelines for constructing cutting tools presented in the specialist literature [6][7][8][9] were employed. It was also assumed that the drill forging had a grinding allowance of 0.3 mm on its diameter.…”
