Thulium-170-Labeled Microparticles for Local Radiotherapy: Preliminary Studies

Abstract: The present article describes the preparation, characterization, and biological evaluation of Thulium-170 ((170)Tm) [T1/2 = 128.4 days; Eβmax = 968 keV; Eγ = 84 keV (3.26%)] labeled tin oxide microparticles for its possible use in radiation synovectomy (RSV) of medium-sized joints. (170)Tm was produced by irradiation of natural thulium oxide target. 170Tm-labeled microparticles were synthesized with high yield and radionuclidic purity (> 99%) along with excellent in vitro stability by following a simple proces… Show more

“…Similar clinical results are reported in horses, where a dose raging between 5 and 15 Gy has been used to treat degenerative joint diseases (DJD) ( 17 , 18 ). First experiences of local radiation therapy by intra-articular administration of β-emitting radionuclides are reported in dogs, showing improvement in clinical signs and no significant side effects ( 19 , 20 ). Recently, a single-fraction 10 Gy RT protocol has been investigated in five Labrador Retrievers affected by elbow OA, with short-term clinical benefit and improved weight bearing in the affected limb ( 21 ).…”

“…Radiolabeling examination was carried out on ZU particles ( 99m Tc-ZU) via a previously applied method. 34,35 Labeling efficiency of 99m Tc-ZU particles was checked by thin layer chromatography using ITLC-SG plates (Agilent Technologies) with MEK eluent. In order to verify in vivo particle size stability and 99m Tc-binding stability of the product, SPECT/CT imaging investigations were performed in a human SPECT/CT system (AnyScan, Mediso Ltd, HU).…”
