Thymoquinone attenuates hepatotoxicity and oxidative damage caused by diazinon: an in vivo study

Abstract: Thymoquinone (TQ) is the main active constituent of Nigella sativa seeds. The objective of this study was to explore the protective effects of TQ on diazinon (DZN)-induced liver toxicity in the mouse model. The animals were divided into five groups of 6 each and treated intraperitoneally. Group 1 received the vehicle, group 2 was given 16 mg/kg DZN, group 3 received 5 mg/kg TQ, and groups 4 and 5 were treated with 1.25 and 5 mg/kg of TQ as well as 16 mg/kg DZN, respectively. Finally, butyrylcholinesterase (BCh… Show more

“…e optimum protective effect was observed at the dose of 200 mg/kg of the extract. In the present study, increased hepatic serum enzymes (ALT, AST, and ALP) are considered as an important biomarker in the diagnosis of liver failure [26]. erefore, the results of the current study indicate disruption of hepatic cells' integrity caused by Cd and occurrence of hepatic failure.…”

“…9,10 Oxidative stress is a state of an imbalance between oxidation and antioxidation involved in cellular damage. 11,12 Excessive accumulation of ROS leads to cellular injuries, such as lipid peroxidation, DNA oxidative disruption, and enzyme inactivation. 13,14 Synthetic or natural scavengers of ROS and antioxidants could attenuate ATO-induced toxicity, thereby enabling full exploitation of the therapeutic potential of ATO.…”

“…Oxidative stress is the outcome of an imbalance between antioxidant system and free radicals created in cellular processes (21). Since this process exerts an important role in cadmium-induced nephrotoxicity, the oxidant/ antioxidant markers such as LPO, TAC and TTM were assayed.…”
