Thymosin-β4 Attenuates Ethanol-induced Neurotoxicity in Cultured Cerebral Cortical Astrocytes by Inhibiting Apoptosis

Abstract: Thymosin-beta4 (Tbeta4) is a major actin monomer-binding peptide in mammalian tissues and plays a crucial role in the nervous system in synaptogenesis, neuronal survival and migration, axonal growth, and plastic changes of dendritic spines. However, it is unknown whether Tbeta4 is also involved in challenges with external stress such as ethanol-induced neurotoxicity. In the present study, we investigated the effects of Tbeta4 on ethanol-induced neurotoxicity in cultured cerebral cortical astrocytes and the und… Show more

“…77 Although we did not investigate apoptosis in the present study, Tβ4 provides the neuroprotection likely through its anti-apoptotic effect. Tβ4 reduces apoptosis in many cells including human corneal epithelial cells 24 and gingival fibroblasts, 54 rat cortical astrocytes 81 and neurons. 11 Intracerebroventricular administration of Tβ4 significantly reduces hippocampal neuronal loss induced by kainic acid.…”

“…Thymosin beta‐4 has also been shown to offset ethanol‐induced neurotoxicity in cultured cortical astrocytes through inhibition of apoptosis signaling (Yang et al . ). One of the mechanisms underlying the capacity of thymosin beta‐4 to suppress apoptosis may in part be because of its anti‐peroxidation effect.…”

“…Tβ4 could inhibit cell apoptosis by regulating the expression of Bcl-2 and Caspase-3. Many studies have proven the efficacy of Tβ4 to inhibit cell apoptosis on various tissue and cells [ 19 , 20 ]. There are also many studies verifying that Tβ4 have significant anti-apoptosis effect on corneal tissue [ 21 , 22 ].…”
