Thyroglobulin levels in COVID-19-positive patients: Correlations with thyroid function tests, inflammatory markers, and glucocorticoid use

Abstract: COVID-19 often results in generalized inflammation and affects various organs and systems. Endocrine research focused on the possible sequelae of COVID-19, with special interest given to the thyroid gland. Clinical problems such as thyroid function in non-thyroidal illness (NTI), autoimmune thyroiditis, and COVID-19-related subacute thyroiditis (SAT) quickly gained wide coverage. Thyrotoxicosis of various origins leads to the release of peripheral thyroid hormones and thyroglobulin (TG), the main glycoprotein … Show more

“…Proteins related to insulin 45 , histones 46 and teneurins 47 are also included at high-ordered places in the final set. Regarding the results of the AlphaFoldDB dataset, macrophage mannose receptor 1 (MRC1) 48 , Thyroglobulin (TG) 49 , contactin-associated protein-like 3 (CTNNAP3) 50 , Hypoxia up-regulated protein 1 (HYOU1) 51 are top entries with reported relationships to the virus. The method again ranks members of alpha-2-macroglobulin/complement 3 protein family (A2M/C3) 52 in high order: pregnancy zone protein (PZP) 53 , CD109 antigen and Alpha-2-macroglobulin 54 , which appears in the results of both human protein datasets.…”

“…Post-COVID-19 SAT cases were characterized by higher levels of fT4, CRP, and TG (155 vs. 60 μg/l) and more commonly associated with persistent hypothyroidism [ 29 ]. In-hospital studies on thyroid function in COVID-19 showed that TG elevation may be, in fact, not very common and rarely associated with thyrotoxicosis [ 23 , 30 ]. A prospective study by Świątkowska-Stodulska and Berlińska et al confirmed that an increase in TG during the initial 10 days of hospital stay due to COVID-19 was not common and a thyrotoxic pattern of thyroid hormones was even more rare [ 30 ].…”

TG levels were significantly lower in patients treated with glucocorticoids, tended to decrease over time, and did not correlate with inflammatory markers or thyroid function tests in a sufficient and repetitive manner [ 30 ].…”

“…The concentration of thyroglobulin (TG) tended to decrease over time, particularly in patients treated with glucocorticoids (GCs). TG levels did not differ significantly between patients with normal and abnormal TFTs [ 13 ].…”
