“…This recurrence rate can be reduced to 2.6%-5% by the Sistrunk procedure. The extended Sistrunk operation, in which the central core of the soft tissue at the anterior neck compartment, from the thyroid gland to the tongue base in addition to the hyoid bone and the fibrous tract, is dissected and removed, has been advocated to prevent recurrence [26,27]. The drawbacks of this surgical procedure include the use of general anesthesia, the extent of scarring, and the associated surgical morbidity [26,27].…”

“…Further, as described by Kim et al [27], in one series of 11 patients, there was significant improvement of symptom grade and cosmetic grade along with a mean volume reduction of 81.3% in thyroglossal duct cysts after ethanol sclerotherapy. In these cases, the treatment consisted of injection of a volume of ethanol equivalent to 50%- 80% of the aspirate volume, which followed aspiration of as much fluid as possible [24,26,27] (Fig. 4).…”

“…We defined treatment success as > 70% regression of the initial cyst volume. The success rate of ethanol for a TGDC was reported to be 33.3% (1/3) by Baskin, 4 100% (2/2) by Fukumoto et al, 8 70% (7/10) by Kim et al 9 , 0% (0/1) by Kim et al, 10 and 83.3% (5/6) by Chow et al 11 But, Baskin, 4 Fukumoto et al, 8 and Chow et al 11 did not measure the volume change after treatment, and they defined treatment success as no recurrence (Table 3). Therefore, we could not assess the VRR based on their studies.…”

“…In this way, the recurrence rate after surgery may be reduced to less than 5% 48 . Besides, recent clinical trials give hints that also sclerotherapeutic approaches (e. g. with ethanol or OK-432) may be successful in this context 32 194 .…”
