Thysanoptera survey on Vicia faba (broad bean) in the arid Biskra region of Algeria

Abstract: A survey of thrips on broad bean plants was conducted during 2010-2011 in three sites of Biskra, whitch is an arid province in Algeria. Scouting for thrips was carried out on plants and flowers of three fields from three locations: Sidi-Okba, M`ziraa and El-Outaya. Seven thrips species belonging to six genera were recorded. Melanthrips fuscus, Aeolothrips intermedius, Rhipidothrips gratiosus, Frankiliniella occidentalis, thrips physapus, Thrips angusticeps and Odontothrips loti. The two last species were the m… Show more

“…Thrips are among the most serious of these pests and are listed as a major insect pests in the Mediterranean region (Sexana, 1991). Thrips use their asymmetrical paired mouth parts to puncture cells on the leaf surface and then ingest or suck plant juices (Razi et al 2013). Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of biotic and abiotic factors on population of cowpea aphid, A. craccivora and T. tabaci on faba bean plants.…”

“…T. angusticeps was the dominant species irrespective of the type of oil flax used. It prefers flax but feeds on many other crops, like sugar beet, onion, peas, narrow-leafed lupin, broad bean, winter wheat and winter rye [10,21,41,44,51,52,58]. T. tabaci, which was the second important phytophagous species on oil flax, is an important pest of onion, other onion relatives, and several crops in most parts of the world [15,25,31,34,39,[41][42][43].…”
