Ti3Sn–NiTi Syntactic Foams with Extremely High Specific Strength and Damping Capacity Fabricated by Pressure Melt Infiltration

Abstract: NiTi shape-memory alloy foams have attracted much attention due to their unique superelasticity, excellent mechanical properties, and damping capacities, but their high-temperature damping capacity and compressive strength remain to be a challenge. Herein, we demonstrate the preparation of Ti3Sn–NiTi syntactic foams using Ti58Ni34Sn8 alloy and alumina microspheres by novel pressure melt infiltration and air-cooling strategies. The syntactic foams with 45% porosity contain spherical and well-distributed pores o… Show more

“…Introduction of porosity may help in reducing its Young’s modulus . Different methods have been previously used for the development of titanium foams, which include melt infiltration, , space holders, replication, , bubble generation, freeze casting, and rapid prototyping. A method that provides accurate control of the volume fraction of pores, pore morphology, pore size, and pore interconnectivity needs to be developed.…”

“…Lightweight foams with high strength and damping capacity are highly attractive in engineering applications. 11 In general, important features of foam structures are energy-absorbing capacity, vibration damping, lightweight and high elasticity. 10 When the content of vinyl acetate (VA) exceeds 40% in ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), EVA will be a polar saturated rubber with polar and ester side groups, which results in a high loss factor.…”

“…Syntactic foam is a typical sort of lightweight closed-cell composite, the porosity of which mainly derives from the hollow fillers embedded inside, endowing syntactic foam with multiple advantages including low density, high specific strength, great energy absorption, and so forth. 1–5 These prominent merits have laid a solid foundation for its widespread applications ranging from aerospace, marine, and automotive industry to construction fields. 6–8 Driven by the necessity of sustainability and environmental preservation, continuous efforts are put into the cyclic utilization of staple wastes to fabricate functional substitutions, which may act as solutions in some environmentally hazardous applications.…”
