Tibiofemoral rotation is related to differences in the lateral femoral condyle configuration in both normal subjects and women with hip dysplasia: a three-dimensional analysis

Abstract: Background We assessed the morphological differences in the knee joint related to knee rotation angle in patients with hip dysplasia. These results may explain the anatomy of the knee in patients with hip dysplasia and aid in planning knee surgery. Methods We enrolled 73 women (146 legs, 35.6 ± 9.0 years) with bilateral hip dysplasia and 45 healthy women (90 legs, 49.0 ± 18.9 years) without lumbago, knee symptoms, or osteoarthritic findings of the knee or spine on plain… Show more

“…In a previous study, Imai et al [10] reported that PI and anatomical pelvic tilt (anatomical-PT), PT relative to APP, was larger in DDH patients than in normal healthy subjects in both groups by three-dimensional (3D) measurement. Moreover, they also described that there was a high correlation between PI and anatomical sacral slope (anatomical-SS) [10, 11]. However, the relationship between anatomical-PT, anatomical-SS, and APPA in that study is unclear.…”

“…ZedView ® , surgical-planning software developed by Lexis, Inc. to create, display, and measure 3D models from 2D continuous slice images, is currently widely used. In addition to measuring the distance and angle between two points [ 18 , 19 ], it can also measure areas and volumes [ 23 , 24 ]. Depending on their application, they are divided into software such as ZedHip ® , ZedKnee ® , ZedShoulder ® , ZedSpine ® , JIGEN ® , ZedOsteotomy ® , and ZedTrauma ® .…”

“…Thus, accurate implant placement is important, and 3D-computed tomography (CT) templates are considered to be effective for this purpose. Our group has been using ZedView ® , a 3D measurement and preoperative planning software, for preoperative planning and postoperative evaluation for more accurate implant placement and osteotomy [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ].…”

“…The femoral condyles of dysplastic hips are smaller and asymmetric, the trochlea is more shallow, the lateral patellar shift is reduced, the patellar tilt angle is increased, and the lower limb alignment is generally in the valgus [1][2][3][4]. These morphological abnormalities tend to show a linear correlation with the degree of hip dislocation [1][2][3][4][5].…”

“…The tibial rotational alignment: the knee rotation angle (KRA: the angle between the perpendicular line of the trans-epicondylar axis and the Akagi's line) and the pelvis-tibia angle (PTA: the angle between the tangent to the posterior ischial spine and the Akagi's line) [5,24].…”
