High-chromium white cast-iron specimens locally reinforced with TiC–metal matrix composites were successfully produced via an in situ technique based on combustion synthesis. Powder mixtures of Ti, Al, and graphite were prepared and compressed to fabricate green powder compacts that were inserted into the mold cavity before the casting. The heat of the molten iron causes the ignition of the combustion reaction of the reactant powders, resulting in the formation of the TiC by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis. The microstructure of the resultant composites and the bonding interfaces was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The microstructural results showed a good adhesion of the composite, suggesting an effective infiltration of the metal into the inserted compact, yet a non-homogeneous distribution of the TiC in the martensite matrix was observed. Based on the results, the in situ synthesis appears to be a great potential technique for industrial applications.

TiC/Ni composite coatings on H13 steel plates were fabricated in situ by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis and combined with a pseudo-heat isostatic press. The microstructure of the coating was characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The microhardness, corrosion, and thermal fatigue behaviors of the coating were investigated by a microhardness test, immersion test, and thermal fatigue test, respectively. The results showed that the in situ coating consisted of TiC and Ni binder phases. Spheroidal TiC particles were enveloped by a nearly continuous Ni binder phase. Coating showed good metallurgical bonding in the interface. The corrosive mechanism of the coating surface in molten aluminum alloy involves the Ni binder phase being etched by aluminum to form AlNi 3 and the oxidization of the TiC-reinforced phase. The corrosive mechanism that occurred at the front of the corrosion involves the Ni binder phase of the coating being etched by aluminum to form AlNi 3 , while the TiC skeleton still maintains the original organizational structure. Hot fatigue cracks began at the defective tips of the coating and propagated in the TiC-reinforced phase. The crack is a trans-granular fracture, which is the result of brittle rupture.

The influence of processing parameters on the micro-hardness and wear resistance of a Ni-based alloy and titanium carbide (TiC) composite cladding layer was studied. Mathematical models were developed to predict the micro-hardness and wear resistance of the cladding layer by controlling the laser cladding processing parameters. Key processing parameters were the laser power, scanning speed, gas flow, and TiC powder ratio. The models were validated by analysis of variance and parameter optimization. Results show that the micro-hardness is positively correlated with laser power and TiC powder ratio, where the TiC powder ratio shows the most significant impact. The wear volume decreased with an increasing TiC powder ratio. The targets for the processing parameter optimization were set to 62 HRC for micro-hardness and a minimal volume wear. The difference between the model prediction value and experimental validation result for micro-hardness and wear volume were 1.87% and 6.33%, respectively. These models provide guidance to optimize the processing parameters to achieve a desired micro-hardness and maximize wear resistance in a composite cladding layer.
