Tierra Del Fuego: What Is Left from the Precolonial Male Lineages?

Abstract: Similar to other South American regions, Tierra del Fuego has an admixed population characterized by distinct ancestors: Native Americans who first occupied the continent, European settlers who arrived from the late 15th century onwards, and Sub-Saharan Africans who were brought to the Americas for slave labor. To disclose the paternal lineages in the current population from Tierra del Fuego, 196 unrelated males were genotyped for 23 Y-STRs and 52 Y-SNPs. Haplotype and haplogroup diversities were high, indicat… Show more

“…The V88 was typed by Sanger sequencing, as described in González et al 22 . The remaining 39 Y-SNPs were included in 5 multiplexes previously described by Brión et al 23 (Multiplexes 1 and 2), Gomes et al 19 (Multiplexes B and E2) and Rodrigues et al 24 (Multiplex E1).…”

“…The genetic data obtained from both modern (Box 2) and ancient individuals provides the opportunity to better understand the effect of colonisation on the genetic variability in the region. Considering uniparental inherited markers, to date there are no specific studies about the composition of paternal lineages in Indigenous Peoples of south Patagonia, but 5 to 12% of the studied individuals form the general population in the region carry an American paternal lineage [108][109][110][111][112], which is consistent with what is observed in the Southern Cone of South America [111,113,114]. In contrast, almost all studied present-day individuals from Indigenous communities in the region carry Indigenous maternal lineages (A2, B2, C1b, C1d, D1 and D4h3a; Figure 2A) [80,99], also in agreement with the results reported for other Southern Cone of South America Indigenous or rural populations [115][116][117][118][119][120].…”

“…One of the strongest links is between Portugal and Brazil (link straight = 23). The two most recent publications from Brazil are in collaboration with researchers from Portugal [ 56 ] and Spain [ 57 ]. Both focus on investigating populations in South America, specifically indigenous males from Ecuador and a population from Tierra del Fuego, Argentina.…”
