Tilapia viscera hydrolysate extract alleviates oxidative stress and renal damage in deoxycorticosterone acetate-salt-induced hypertension rats

Abstract: Background and Aim: Hypertension is closely related to oxidative stress conditions, which increases malondialdehyde (MDA) expression and renal damage. Tilapia viscera hydrolysate extract (TVHE) contains compounds and peptides that act as antioxidants. This study aimed to investigate TVHE therapy effect on MDA levels and renal histological conditions in deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-salt-induced hypertension rats. Materials and Methods: Tilapia viscera were defatted and hydrolyzed using Alcalase enzyme to… Show more

“…These results are in line with previous studies that have reported the ability of bioactive peptides to reduce the concentration of MDA in the kidney [64,65]. Fish viscera hydrolysate has been proven to reduce kidney MDA levels in an experimental model of hypertension, similar to the reduction in MDA levels observed with captopril [66]. Among the mechanisms of action, it has been postulated that bioactive peptides could reduce MDA levels via the activation of enzymes involved in oxidative stress defense pathways, such as superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase [65].…”

“…Antioxidant activity is measured through the ability to convert DPPH radicals into a colourless product. The more colourless the products were, or, in other words, the lower the IC 50 values, the more potent the ability of the extract to donate electrons or provide hydrogen atoms [ 30 , 31 ]. A previous report suggested that flavonols possess significant antioxidant properties among other classes of flavonoids due to their C 2 =C 3 double bond conjugated in 3-OH [ 32 ].…”

“…[2][3][4] They scavenge free radicals, function as reducing agents, and reduce the oxidation caused by transition metals like Fe. Plants, 5 fruits, 6 and animal product derivatives like fish by-products, 7 and eggs, 8 can all be sources of natural antioxidants. They contain various components of complex antioxidant compounds that can protect cell damage from oxidative stress and reduce the risk of chronic disease.…”
