Tilting Pad Journal Bearing Ball and Socket Pivots: Experimental Determination of Stiffness

Abstract: Tilting pad journal bearings (TPJB) are used in turbomachinery for their stability at high speeds. For design purposes, it is necessary to preliminarily investigate the turbomachine rotor dynamic behavior by simulation. The dynamic characteristics of all components must be known as precisely as possible and experimental validation of each single model is required. While a lot of work has been carried out on bearings, the ball-and-socket stiffness is still estimated by means of Hertzian formulas. Recently, some… Show more

“…Contact mechanics studies are also part of this branch. The applicability of some classical formulas is questionable for some particular contacts, as evidenced experimentally in the work presented in [27], while the formulas can be implemented in modern programs to allow a more comprehensive analysis [28]. Molecular dynamics simulations can also be considered among the fundamental studies, but they can also be included in the Tribology of Materials and in the Lubricants and Micro and Nanotribology branches, similarly to all basic studies on different materials and lubricants up to the micro-nano level.…”

“…The radial stiffness of an RB or B&S pivot can be evaluated through classical Hertz theory if the contact is non-conformal [8]. However, Hertz's formulas are not reliable for quasi-conformal contacts, as observed experimentally in [9], and whenever Hertz's hypotheses are not satisfied and contact stiffness assessment is important, the latter should be evaluated more accurately [10]. Recently, Fang et al proposed a theory for the estimation of radial stiffness of quasi-conformal B&S contact [11].…”
