Recently, several researchers have proposed to employ self-organized time division multiple access (STDMA) as an alternative Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol of vehicular communications and have studied STDMA to verify its feasibility to vehicular safety applications. However, most of studies have mainly focused on comparing STDMA with enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) and have several limitations to reveal the feasibility: (1) they have not considered time synchronization error and (2) they have evaluated STDMA with only a single set of configurable parameters. Thus, the feasibility of STDMA to vehicular safety applications still remains unexplored and is an open issue. In this paper, we examine the performances of STDMA to confirm two points: (1) whether or not STDMA is feasible to safety applications even with time synchronization error and (2) whether or not proper configuration really helps to improve the performances. Our simulation results corroborate that current form of STDMA is not feasible to vehicular safety applications and we can improve STDMA via proper parameter configurations.

Vehicular ad hoc networks are a long-term solution contributing significantly towards intelligent transport systems (ITS) in providing access to critical life-safety applications and services. Although vehicular ad hoc networks are attracting greater commercial interest, current research has not adequately captured the real-world constraints in vehicular ad hoc network handover techniques. Therefore, in order to have the best practice for vehicular ad hoc network services, it is necessary to have seamless connectivity for optimal coverage and ideal channel utilisation. Due to the high velocity of vehicles and smaller coverage distances, there are serious challenges in providing seamless handover from one roadside unit (RSU) to another. Though other research efforts have looked at many issues in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), very few research work have looked at handover issues. Most literature assume that handover does not take a significant time and does not affect the overall VANET operation. In our previous work, we started to investigate these issues. This journal provides a more comprehensive analysis involving the beacon frequency, the size of beacon and the velocity of the vehicle. We used some of the concepts of Y-Comm architecture such as network dwell time (NDT), time before handover (T BH ) and exit time (ET) to provide a framework to investigate handover issues. Further simulation studies were used to investigate the relation between beaconing, velocity and the network dwell time. Our results show that there is a need to understand the cumulative effect of beaconing in addition to the probability of successful reception as well as how these probability distributions are affected by the velocity of the vehicle. This provides more insight into how to support life critical applications using proactive handover techniques.

This paper addresses the issue of real-time data transmission in vehicles to roadside environment by the hybrid coordination function controlled channel access (HCCA) scheme with Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 802.11p protocol. The HCCA is one of the medium access protocols specified in 802.11p standard, which uses a polling scheme similar to the point coordination function to provide a reliable QoS. In this paper, we improve the HCCA polling scheme and design a new data transmission scheduling method. We also prepared a mathematical model to systematically evaluate the performance of the HCCA in terms of average delay. Moreover, we analyze the factors that could impact the average delay, throughput, and packet loss rate as well. The simulation results are compared with the original scheme specified in the standard. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed delay model could estimate the average delay of the HCCA with a high precision, whereas the proposal of the enhancement of the HCCA has lower delay, lower loss rate, and higher throughput than the one specified in the standard.
