Time Course of Effects of Testosterone Administration on Sexual Arousal in Women

Abstract: There is a time lag in the effect of sublingually administered testosterone on genital arousal in women. In addition, a consecutive increase in vaginal arousal might cause higher genital sensations and sexual lust.

“…The middle-aged women first completed a sexual arousal questionnaire (SAQ) (Tuiten et al, 2000), before the first venous blood sample was collected. Thereafter, a nasal dose of testosterone (0.9 mg; Noseafix s ) or placebo was administered in a double-blind, crossover manner.…”

“…Whereas these studies investigated the effects of prolonged testosterone exposure recent studies suggest, that testosterone influences anxiety and sexual behavior also rapidly (Aikey et al, 2002;James and Nyby, 2002). Moreover, a single testosterone administration already increases physiological arousal in response to affective and erotic stimuli in women (Tuiten et al, 2000;van Honk et al, 2001). …”

“…Interestingly, reductions in behavioral inhibition and anxiety have been found after administrating the steroid hormone testosterone (Svensson et al, 2003). Testosterone arguably exerts these anxiolytic effects through receptor binding in steroid responsive networks located in subcortical structures (Wood, 1996;Tuiten et al, 2000;Van Honk et al, 2001). Since increases in delta (1-3 Hz) synchronization predict reduced anxiety (Hotz et al, 2000), testosterone might in particular influence delta synchronization specifically and thereby affect the coupling between the subcortical lower (i.e.…”

“…On two testing days, which were separated by three weeks, between 09:00 and 10:00 h, participants received a single sublingually administration of 0.5 mg testosterone (with cyclodextrine as carrier) or placebo. Three hours after intake, see Tuiten et al (2000) for the rationale behind this strategy, a 4-min electroencephalographic (EEG) baseline recording from the frontal, Fp1, Fp2, F3, F4 and Fz electrode sites was obtained (impedance: -5 kV, sampling rate: 250 Hz, amplification: 20 000). Raw EEG data were corrected for horizontal and vertical eye movements using linear regression.…”

“…Testosterone is associated with an increase in both sexual arousal and aggression in men and women (Glina, 2004;Hermans, Ramsey, & van Honk, 2008;Olweus, Mattson, Schalling, & Low, 1988;Tuiten et al, 2000). Furthermore, most instances of global violence and homicide are perpetrated by young men against other young men (Daly & Wilson, 1988), the same demographic that is disproportionately represented in militaries and coalitional combat units across communities and generations (though most generals, bureaucrats, politicians, leaders, and other "behind the scenes" individuals are usually older; see Browne, Chapter 22, this volume).…”
