Time-Dependent Changes of Urethral Function in Diabetes Mellitus: A Review

Abstract: This article reviewed the current knowledge on time-course manifestation of diabetic urethral dysfunction (DUD), and explored an early intervention target to prevent the contribution of DUD to the progression of diabetes-induced impairment of the lower urinary tract (LUT). In the literature search through PubMed, key words used included “diabetes mellitus,” “diabetic urethral dysfunction,” and “diabetic urethropathy.” Polyuria and hyperglycemia induced by diabetes mellitus (DM) can cause the time-dependent cha… Show more

“…Microvascular alterations with mild mechanical trauma, inflammation, microvasculitis, and ischemia are also causative factors [10]. In contrast, molecular changes in autonomic small-diameter myelinated/unmyelinated fiber in type 2 diabetes remain to be clarified [11, 12] and may have different pathophysiology from limb neuropathy.…”

“…Los casos de cistitis gangrenosa posparto están asocia-dos con parto prolongado e instrumental que producen alteraciones en la transmisión de los impulsos eléctricos de los nervios pélvicos que ocasionan hipotonía vesical, distensión excesiva y cistitis gangrenosa (4) . En raras ocasiones, la cistitis gangrenosa puede originar la formación de fístulas colovesicales (14) .…”

“…In diabetic cystopathy, both detrusor overactivity and detrusor underactivity can occur, mostly depending on the duration of diabetes. Despite the lack of functional tests our diabetic rat model could be more reflective of the initial phase of diabetic cystopathy, which includes bladder hypertrophy and detrusor underactivity [13,14].…”
