Time-domain image processing using dynamic holography

Abstract: Coded ultrafast optical pulses can be treated as onedimensional (1-D) images in the time domain. We have converted space-domain images into time-domain images using diffraction from dynamic holograms inside a Fourier pulse shaper, with photorefractive quantum wells (QW's) used as the dynamic holographic medium. We present several examples, in which amplitude or phase modulation of the hologram writing beams modifies the complex spectrum of the femtosecond output, resulting in a time-domain image. Both storage … Show more

“…They have applications in laser-based ultrasound detection, 157,160 optical coherence imaging, [161][162][163][164] and femtosecond pulse manipulation. [165][166][167] A spinning disk carrying patterned protein films through a focused laser beam represents a highfrequency phase modulation that can be captured under phase-locked conditions using adaptive interferometry. 57 As an example of an assay on the adaptive optical BioCD, a two-analyte assay was performed that had two targets, mouse IgG capturing antimouse IgG, and rabbit IgG capturing antirabbit IgG.…”

“…1,2 However, because of the low refractive-index modulations or the small thicknesses of the nonlinear material used for recording these gratings, the Bragg diffraction properties of thick gratings may be insufficient for practical applications. In such a case, as shown theoretically, 3 this inconvenience can be overcome by placing the sinusoidal grating in a FabryPerot cavity.…”

“…Researchers have also employed the concepts of spatial holography to process time-domain information, e.g. for temporal-domain imaging processing [4] or photochemical hole burning [5]. We refer here to 'temporal holography' as the time-domain counterpart of spatial holography.…”
