The destruction of the earth’s ecosystems is the most pressing issue globally. Carbon emissions account for nearly half of global air pollution. Methane is the primary source of ground-level ozone and a significant source of greenhouse gases (GHGs), with greater warming potential than carbon dioxide emissions. The study examines the impact of the different methane emissions (released by agriculture, energy, and industrial sectors), urbanization, natural resource depletion, and livestock production on carbon emissions in the panel of selected Asian countries for the period of 1971 to 2020. The results show that energy associated methane emissions, livestock production, natural resource depletion, and urbanization are the main detrimental factors of environmental degradation across countries. The causality estimates show the unidirectional relationship running from livestock production and agriculture methane emissions to carbon emissions, from total methane emissions and carbon emissions to urbanization and from urbanization to energy methane emissions and livestock production. The forecasting estimates suggest that total methane emissions, natural resource depletion, and urbanization will likely increase carbon emissions over the next ten years. The study concludes that the energy sector should adopt renewable energy sources in its production process to minimize carbon emissions. Urbanization and excessive resource exploitation must be curtailed to attain carbon neutrality.

Singapore has been listed as one of the top-visited countries and has the highest ecological deficit. Despite the abundance of previous studies, the distinction between short, medium, and long term by decomposing tourism development, economic growth, energy consumption, and ecological footprint has been largely ignored. This study aims to investigate the lead-lag nexus structures between ecological footprint and Singapore's economic activities from 1978 to 2016. By adopting the wavelet analysis and scale-by-scale Granger causality test, the outcomes show that energy consumption positively impacts ecological footprint at high frequencies, while tourism and economic growth positively drive ecological footprint at high and medium frequencies. We also find that the positive impact of macroeconomic variables on ecological footprint has not been evident since 2003. Additionally, the wavelet-based Granger test confirms a bi-directional causal between economic growth and ecological footprint at all frequencies, whilst there is a bi-directional relationship between tourism, energy consumption, and ecological footprint at high frequency. Based on these findings, the research may further strengthen the belief of Singapore’s policy-makers on the promotion of tourism and suggests some helpful lessons for emerging countries.

As economies continue to grow in the face of global climate change, international policy is focusing on the combined pursuit of social and environmental development, or 'sustainable development goals'. Whilst such goals are often framed from the perspective of high-income countries, low-income countries struggle to balance their carbon-intensive growth strategies with poverty alleviation, and carbon emission reduction. Combined with the prospect of economic growth driving income inequality higher, the potential for a vicious cycle to emerge in low-income countries in particular is considerable. Whilst the negative association between economic growth and poverty is well established, the effectiveness of growth-based programmes as a poverty reduction strategy in the context of climate change and inequality is less certain. We explore the prospects of balancing these development goals and their consequences using an international dataset, and generalized method of moments estimators. We find that although economic development reduces poverty, carbon emissions (from carbon-intensive growth) coupled with inequality, exacerbates poverty. Secondly, we find that in terms of poverty reduction, poor countries are negatively impacted by both carbon emissions and income inequality, while rich countries are primarily impacted by income inequality. Finally, we find the effect of emissions on poverty is stronger for countries at higher poverty levels, suggesting that international policies aimed at achieving equitable emissions reduction should consider the potential for disproportionate negative impacts on poorer countries.
